Opener Phil Hughes joins young quicks in Ricky Ponting's Australia squad

Australia have handed Phillip Hughes the chance to press his claims for an Ashes berth by naming the swashbuckling opening batsman in the 15-man squad to tour India.
Selectors named Hughes in a squad brimming with young hopefuls for the two-Test battle with India, starting on October 1.

Rookie paceman Peter George and teenage quick Josh Hazlewood have been named in the squad, along with more experienced bowlers Doug Bollinger, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Johnson and spinner Nathan Hauritz.

Young all-rounder Steven Smith has been retained after making his Test bow against Pakistan in England earlier this year.
Tim Paine kept his place as the squad's wicket-keeper as Brad Haddin continues to battle an elbow complaint.

As expected, struggling batsman Marcus North was given another life but the recall of Hughes, who suffered a dislocated shoulder in May, makes things interesting.
"All these exciting young players have the potential to have a big impact in international cricket for many years and the panel is confident they will all equip themselves well if the opportunity presents itself on this tour."
