Glenn Maxwell surprise selection for Bushrangers

THE fielding brilliance of young all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was enough to win a place in Victoria's team for its opening Champions League game against hosts Eastern Cape Warriors.

The 21-year-old off-spinning all-rounder has just one domestic one-day and one home Twenty20 innings that returned 10 runs form seven balls.

But the Bushrangers' heriachy were very comfortable with the choice of him stepping out ahead of some bigger names for the hostilities that were due to start in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday), Melbourne time.

An emerging batsman with a bag of new-age ''tricks'' while at the crease, he is the proverbial jet in the field - a skill area that has won him a star of a couple of Test caps Peter Siddle and Bryce McGain, as well as rising star Jame Pattinson.

''A player like that if selected, the expectation is he's going to save you 10 to 15 runs across the course of an innings, take a catch and perhaps get a run-out,'' coach Greg Shipperd said.
''And he's got some tricks with the bat - we haven't seen all of them yet - he still working his game out. But he's a young, emerging player who we're keen on promoting.''

Maxwell himself didn't really expect a start in the team's series opener, but intends to grab the chance with both hands.

"I'm still finding my feet in the other forms of the game but it's a good place to start, in the Twenty20 set-up where you are a specialist fielder and you can bowl a bit and bat in the middle order," Maxwell said, adding his immediate goal is to cement a place in the powerful Bushrangers T20 side.

"Definitely - a consistent spot in the Twenty20 and one-day teams. If I can get a first-class debut that'd be an absolute dream for me, but I still think that's a fair way off. I've got a lot of training to do and have to adapt my game to suit the Victorian standards."

First class cricket for Maxwell is certainly on other people radar.

Siddle, McGain left out of Victoria's T20 Champions League opener

Victoria has elected to pass over Test bowlers Peter Siddle and Bryce McGain for its opening match in the Champions League Twenty20 tonight.

The team has sprung a surprise by selecting specialist fielder and batsman Glenn Maxwell at No.8 for the match against South Africa's Warriors at their home St George's Park stadium, while John Hastings, the most-used bowler of all of last season, will also feature in the Bushrangers' side.

Peter Siddle, returning from back stress fractures, has been overlooked for match one of the Bushrangers' Champions League campaign, as has fellow Australian Test bowler Bryce McGain and emerging paceman James Pattinson. All, however, are considered strong chance to play at least one of the team's four matches in this tournament.

Victoria today plays South Africa's Warriors at their home ground of St George's Park at Port Elizabeth, one of three home venues for the Champions League.

South Australia Redbacks beat Highveld Lions in Champions League clash Captain Klinger leads South Australia to facile win

New South Australia cricket captain Michael Klinger and returning international Callum Ferguson helped the Redbacks to an 11-run win over South Africa's Highveld Lions in their first Champions League Twenty20 game at SuperSport Park.

SA lost the toss and made 6-178, with Klinger (78 off 48 balls) and Ferguson (47 off 27) piling on 97 in a third wicket stand in nine and a half overs.

It was 25-year-old Ferguson's first major innings in 11 months, since he suffered a serious knee injury at the same ground while playing in the Champions Trophy final.

In reply, the Lions, who beat Mumbai Indians in their first Group B game last Friday, lost wickets at regular intervals and finished at 8-167.

Express paceman Shaun Tait (3-36) was the Redbacks most successful bowler, taking one wicket in the first over and two in his second spell.

Captain Alviro Petersen (56 off 35) was the only significant contributor to the Lions chase, the South Africans unable to muster a single 50 partnership. Klinger, who replaced Graham Manou as captain for this season, notched his first Twenty20 half century in 14 innings.

Ferguson struck seven boundaries, while Klinger tallied six fours and five sixes.

SA play their next match against Mumbai in Durban, while Australian Twenty20 champions Victoria open their campaign against South Africa's Warriors in Port Elizabeth on Monday.
